Why looking professional is only half the job

A good brand should look professional, but it also needs to help people quickly understand who you are, what you do and why they should choose you.

01

Looking good is the starting point.

A tidy logo, good colours and a modern website help people see that the business is professional. But if they still cannot work out what you do or why they should choose you, the brand is not doing enough.

The words, images and overall feel should make the business easier to recognise and remember. Good design supports the message. It cannot replace it.

02

Think about what the customer needs to know.

Before choosing fonts or layouts, ask what a customer is trying to decide. Are they checking whether you have the experience? Comparing prices? Looking for someone local? Trying to understand a service they have never bought before?

Your brand and website should answer those questions quickly. For a Tamworth service business, that might mean showing local knowledge, introducing the people clients will deal with and giving clear examples of the work.

  • Who are we trying to reach?
  • What should they understand straight away?
  • What might stop them from getting in touch?
  • What can we honestly say that competitors cannot?
03

Make it feel like the same business everywhere.

Your website, Google Business Profile, social pages, signs and sales documents do not need to look identical. They do need to sound and feel like they came from the same business.

A few clear rules for colours, type, images and tone make that easier. Customers see a business that knows who it is, and your team spends less time reinventing things.

04

Try the ten-second test.

Show someone outside the business your homepage for ten seconds. Then ask what the business does, who it helps and what they would do next. If the only answer is ‘it looks nice’, there is still work to do.

The best brand is not the cleverest one. It is the one that feels like your business and makes it easier for the right customer to choose you.

Good advice should make the next step easier.
